Three Architectural Projects Earn State Awards
Charlottesville, VA –Three standout architectural designs have earned top honors in the 2024 Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) Exhibition of School Architecture, with two additional projects earning honorable mentions. These winning projects showcase innovative design in new construction, renovation, and adaptive reuse of existing spaces, reflecting the future of educational environments. Selected from 14 outstanding entries submitted by eight architectural firms, these award-winning designs will be unveiled at the VSBA Annual Convention in Williamsburg, VA, November 20-22, 2024. This year’s competition is proudly sponsored by First Citizens Bank.
Platinum Design Award: VMDO Architects for Crozet Elementary School, Albemarle County Public Schools
To support the continued growth of Albemarle County, the Crozet Elementary School Renovation and Addition more than doubles its capacity from 330 students to 680 students. The additions include a three-story learning wing that includes classrooms, resource rooms, distributed offices and staff support spaces, a two-story movement space to expand physical education, and a kitchen addition that allows for expansion of the dining space.
Gold Design Award: Moseley Architects for Quinton Elementary School, New Kent County Public Schools
Quinton Elementary School provides students and teachers with an enhanced learning environment while also meeting future enrollment demands and fulfilling the community’s needs. By thoughtfully assessing the impact of color and materials on student outcomes, the school’s design prioritizes functionality. Within the vibrant academic wings, students can access extended learning spaces to delve deeper into their studies and collaborate with peers.
Silver Design Award: Perkins Eastman for Alexandria City High School at Minnie Howard, Alexandria City Public Schools
Building upon Alexandria City Public Schools’ innovative connected high school network, Alexandria City High School at Minnie Howard reimagines the high school learning environment to enhance the student experience. With distributed dining that creates a multi-level “Creative Commons,” active and experiential CTE programming situated in the very heart of the school, and expanded health and wellness initiatives provided by city partners, this school is designed to foster student success.
