Dr. Michael Thornton Joins the Virginia School Boards Association’s Superintendent Search Team
Charlottesville, VA – The Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) today announced that Dr. Michael Thornton is joining the association’s superintendent search services team.
“We look forward to adding Dr. Thornton’s experience and expertise to the Virginia School Boards Association’s superintendent search services team,” said Executive Director Gina Patterson.
As a member of the superintendent search team, Thornton will work with school boards through the process of hiring a new educational leader including gathering public input, drafting position announcements, consulting with the board on the interview process, and working with the new board/superintendent team once a selection has been made. Thornton has previously served a presenter at numerous association webinars, workshops and conferences and is considered an expert in the school budgeting and finance process. Thornton also works with school divisions on their annual superintendent evaluation, leading a workshop twice per year for the association.
Thornton has over 34 years’ experience as a Virginia Educator, most recently serving as Superintendent of Surry County Public Schools. Before then, he served in administrative and financial positions with the public-school divisions in Norfolk City, Hanover County, Hampton City and Williamsburg-James City County. He holds a doctorate in educational leadership and policy.
