Three Architectural Projects Earn State Awards
Charlottesville, VA – Three architectural projects are being recognized in the 2023 Virginia School Boards Association’s Exhibition of School Architecture. Winning projects were selected from 10 entries submitted by six architectural firms in the areas of new construction, renovation, and adaptive use of existing space. The following designs and firms will be recognized at the opening general session of the VSBA Annual Convention being held in Williamsburg, VA from November 15-17, 2023. First Citizens Bank sponsored this year’s competition.
AWARD: Platinum Design Award
FIRM: Stantec Architecture Inc.
PROJECT: Meridian High School
DIVISION: Falls Church City Public Schools
Meridian High School’s vertical high school design offers flexible floorplans providing security, efficiency, and adaptability to support programs and educational needs as they evolve. The academic setting, with visual transparency and natural daylighting, encourages creative thought, community building, and individual growth. All aspects of the design, from the space planning to the furniture, reinforce the client’s goals of community and collaboration.

FIRM: VMDO Architects
PROJECT: Cardinal Elementary School
DIVISION: Arlington County Public Schools
Built as an addition and partial renovation at the historic Reed School building, Cardinal Elementary School is a four-story net-zero-energy-ready building that encourages creativity, curiosity, and joy for children in Arlington, VA. The school accommodates more than 800 students on a small footprint that maximizes open space for neighborhood assets such as barrier-free playgrounds, open play fields, and an underground stormwater vault.

PROJECT: Collaboration & Career Development Center
DIVISION: Floyd County Public Schools
The new Collaboration and Career Development Center at Floyd County High School provides Floyd County Public Schools students and members of the community with skills needed for the future job market. This innovative facility represents a significant transformation of the previous career and technical education building into an eighth-grade learning space as well as state-of-the-art additions to house our welding, business, culinary, building trades, robotics, and health science courses.
